There are advantages (and disadvantages) to offering students an environment that we control to carry out the hands-on activities. This would allow us to provide more complex software setups without worrying about the time and other potential challenges for students to get them installed and working.
So far, our strategy has been to minimize the need for an actual development environment, and keep it minimal where it is required. Is that too much of a limitation on what we want to present?
Possible sources of online computing platforms might include:
A lab-owned server that we can give everyone access to (probably challenging from a cyber-security perspective)
Finding an outside collaborator (academic?) willing to make a system available
Getting resources from one of the computing facilities (though nothing we're doing is directly related to them, nor does it really need the kinds of systems they have on offer)
