I wait for that one ! 😃
+1
I was just thinking : when you add the payee feature, there will be a conversion process. For this process not to be too time consuming would be great to be able to :
Looking for feedback if you have it: if I renamed "Memo" to "Payee" (and then did autocomplete #106) would it be sufficient to expect Memo-type stuff to go in notes?
What are the pros/cons of this change in how you budget? I'm asking because I think I would leave the memo blank 90% of the time.
Currently I rarely use memo - most of the time only when returning some stuff or when I need to remember things. All other times, I only use payee

It would be a nice change for me, but I see two problems :
I'm all waiting for auto-complete :-)

I used both Memo and Payee for most of my transactions. I'm forgetful and like to know what that $45 was for so I put that in Memo.
I know this is ongoing but wanted to highlight the importance of the Payee feature to me. This is the only thing stopping me from using Buckets exclusively (vs YNAB4).
Justification for Payee:
Allows more accurate visualisation of money allocation (and provides option for future "auto-fill of memo").
Reason memo is insufficient: Does not allow me to separate items out. E.g. Payee = Bob's Supermarket. Memo = Potatoes, Carrots, Salt etc vs. current system of Memo = "Bob's Supermarket": Potatoes, Carrots, Salt
Also, reporting with fewer fields means can only categorize by the Category field, rather than by Payee (how many times did I shop at Bob's Supermarket vs Paul's Supermarket?).
Honestly at this point, this is the only thing I'm waiting on to switch from YNAB. I love the simplicity of the tool, but the payee field is a standard in any budgeting or accounting tool.

I know this comment is >3 years old, but I think that is sufficient. As a new user (nYNAB convert from this month's craziness) I honestly didn't even notice we had the ability to add notes to a Transaction until reading your comment. The big thing for me is being able to search the memo field - and that does appear to work 👍🏻 If you decide to rename Memo to Payee, and maybe add autocomplete functionality there, that'd be awesome - but either way I think you've got a new license purchase from me.
I use Payee to record where we bought something - as in who got the money, and then the memo/notes is often used for bigger/unusual transactions... So over a year if I filter on a payee like
The small amount I dont really care about (nails / glue / etc) - but when I look back over a year - its nice to see what the big fluctuations are. So I know if it's gonna be a recurring big post or a oneoff, or that I should stop speding soo much on hardware
Would definitely like to track the payee in a payee field, and a comment about the transaction in a memo field.
@mjstakem and @KalleDK - Was looking for the same thing and didn't realize there is a Notes button separate from the Memo field.. You have to hover your cursor on the left side of the transaction, just to the right of the checkbox. Click the notepad icon to store your transaction-specific notes there. I do agree with the above comment to rename Memo to Payee, so there is less confusion between memo and notes.
I just started using Buckets last night and found it very friendly...
On the Payee vs Memo vs Note comments, I vote for the Payee AND Memo fields...I imported my YNAB4 transactions... I lost all Payee information and only have whatever was in the Memo field!!! The Note is useful (I see it exports it), but when going through transactions you must specifically open the Note to see any comments... Its more practical to have it visible for analysis purposes...
Another comment I'd add is that in the Export, it does not export the Group the Category belongs to... So if you have two categories with same name you have a problem... (eg: Auto : Other Expenses and Home : Other Expenses)
I would also like having a payee and memo field or payee and notes but having payees and being able to sort is nice in other apps.
I just wanted to follow up - any plans to implement this feature?
This would be a great feature to add. If this is added, it would fit great with a "possible duplicate payee" functionality (much like the possible duplicate transactions). Having this would then also fit great with an additional analysis screen showing a breakdown of expenses to particular payees over a selected amount of time.

For me, memo act as payee when I import data from my bank. But my bank add date/number to this info, so it will be great to keep memo as right now and add a payee info so I can manually populate it.
Coming from YNAB 4. Used Payee field to enter what store etc (ex:Costco) and notes to identify certain items (eggs, chair, etc).
I do miss this feature after migrating to Buckets. For now using Memo field to enter payee info + items purchased.
Was just about to finally get off of YNAB4, but the only thing stopping me is the missing Payee feature. I rely on the ability to combine payments onto Payees.
Don't let it stop you, get onboard and treat it as a bonus. Great application, don't let that stop you, I didn't.

Buckets definitely needs a payee field, as well as a visible memo field - in addition, the memo field should be able to populate unique lines for each split in a transaction. See YNAB4 for example: The notes option should not go away; it has a different function.
Payee + visible memo would increase workflow efficiency for those who use both fields and it would not hamper the workflow for users who typically leave at the memo field blank. It also would allow (as others upthread commented) for additional reporting schema.
+1 from my side! Still running YNAB4 with Wine due to lack of alternatives.
This is one of the things that is missing compared to YNAB. When I purchase something I'd like to have it be listed against the payee. Then you can click on the payee and see all transactions made at that place, while also having a memo field to narrow down what was purchased there.
I'd like to also add a plug for this. I think Payee and Memo are different and they should both be tracked. Notes is for something different, and in my mind it is ok to have notes that are 'hidden' until you click on them (but you can see which transactions have notes -- as it is now). I think you should have the option to display both Payee, and Memo fields in the main transaction list. For times when someone is not using one of those, or the screen is too small, it would be great to have the option to 'hide' certain columns (like Payee or Memo) for those that didn't want it.
