Hi all,

the documentation of IfcDocumentInformation has definitions for these attributes:

Purpose: Purpose for this document IntendedUse: Intended use for this document Scope: Scope for this document

What is the difference between these three attributes?

So I recently implemented drawing sheets as IfcDocumentInformation. This, coupled with an attempt in FM to link document management systems (iTwo, Oracle Aconex, BIM360 Docs) with IfcDocumentInformation made me rethink what I previously found confusing, but now I find quite useful in IFC.

IFC has Purpose, IntendedUse, and Scope. I found these confusing in the past. My new interpretation is:

Purpose - to distinguish between things like drawings, specifications, contracts, manuals, etc. IntendedUse - "For information", "For construction", "For tender" Scope - you know how drawing packages are grouped? Like General arrangement drawings, zone drawings, overalls, details, etc? This would be it.

(depending on the language, Purpose or Scope could be swapped around)

Note to check out other standards like ISO19650 and whether these can correlate.
