Client refactoring #31

The client got crufty and hackish. We're taking it out of hackish and back into some semblance of order.

Currently going on in the client-refactor branch (see around commitish 15350a4dcda8e1aff687df5416175d3953728329).

Should be okay as of commitish 3104c44e43ea7f000f6b9e756d622f98110d0a21 (so merged into master). For further work, pull out into branch iss31.
