Each project should have a .gitignore file to ignore files that shouldn't be committed in Git. A good place to start is always this community managed Gitignore file.
Also, the project needs to be checked for unnecessary files that were already checked in. They should be deleted and commited as deleted to remove them – just adding them to the Gitignore file doesn't untrack them.
