A README.md can both document the project for visitors of the project (especially once it's open sourced) and also can explain how contributors may build the project (e.g. by listing requirements) and what they should adhere to. A CONTRIBUTING.md can contain further information for contributors. A LICENSE file is also definitely necessary before this can be open sourced, otherwise no one would be able to contribute.
