One recommendation for iOS as an option is to try to attempt a sync when the 
application minimizes.  iOS gives a maximum of 10 minutes running in background 
code before a kill -9 (unless you're a maps or music app).  It should be plenty 
of time to sync the delta's required.  Our app currently does this.
