10 years ago I'm looking at the code for this… the "?" thing was a semi-clever hack to provide a way to get fire the full completion list. In order to make this work the way you want it to (which does make sense), I need to back out the "?", but it has to be there in the current logic, and it's probably too late to try to rework that stuff.

To replicate, select Range Handle or Incident Type field and enter ? to list entries. Start typing an entry. The first character of the first entry in the dropdown opened by ? is retained.
For instance, I enter ? to open the Incident Type list, see Echelon and start typing 'ech' but the 'a' from Admin is retained at the beginning of the field so I don't get the entry from the list I was aiming for.
