fix for issue # 6 #8

I saw @jdbarrera 's PR and comments, but couldn't find his updated fix, so I threw this together. I tested it on my device and it works. Should be a bit more bullet proof from future breaking changes of the same type.

@mellertson Thanks for the PR, I just merged this change and published as 1.0.3, which should fix the problem. Let me know if you still have any issues and we can reopen. Closing for now.
