Refactoring is underway. #26

I've created a branch to do an extensive refactoring and bug fixing
operation on the code base, which is going to take me a few days to
complete.  People are welcome to play with the trunk code in the mean time
- I'll work any changes, fixes, or upgrades you make into what I end up
with when I'm done.  This issue will be closed when I'm finished and the
changes are merged back into the trunk.

Okay, I've made a whole bunch of changes designed to simplify, streamline, and
enhance the code.  It's not done (by a long shot), but since the perfect is the 
enemy
of the good, I'm calling it a day for now to work on other features.  Thus, I 
folded
the changes back into the trunk and I'm closing this issue for now.
