I second the idea that this would be more natural than the current behavior. That's not to say it's worth the effort or isn't, but i do think it's a good idea.
I'm lukewarm about the naturalness; I feel like marking things as read should leave you looking at the same thing you were looking at, but with things marked as read, rather than jumping you to some other page.
If others disagree, could this be a user preference? I find the current behavior disconcerting, where it merely jumps back to the threads list, and I think I'd find it even worse if it jumped to different places depending on the circumstances.
(I predict that one's opinion about this correlates with whether one's first Usenet newsreader was rn or nn. :^)
When you mark a thread as read in the forum, it currently displays the list of all the threads on that board.
If there are no other new posts on that board, should it display the main forum overview instead? And if so, how valuable would this be, considering that it's probably a bit fiddly to implement?
