I'm pretty sure that the 150 px side length came about because of a compromise between image quality, display size, and download amount (i.e., number of bytes). Since we worked out that compromise, we now have far increased bandwidth, retina displays, and far improved browser support for automatic image rescaling.
I'm happy to revisit this issue again, along with the issues raised in #1950.
If we make them bigger, we're going to need better images of all the buttons, because scaling up will just look bad. We have a lot of them, but there''s a bunch that we barely got hold of in the first place.
If we go this route, we should try to make sure that we have high resolution images whenever possible, so we don't go through this again if we later decide an even larger size is warranted
There's several better images on the buttonmen wiki, even some actual pre-buttoned blanks (I've tried to get ahold of those whenever possible).
I have been told that James Ernest has a collection of the blanks, at least the licensed ones, so if someone who's friends with him would like to make contact and ask for all of them, I'll happily chunk them out into circles and re-size them for the site. Some of the early promo buttons, though, like the Yoyodyne set, he might not have still.
So how did the 150px images come to be? Could we upgrade to 300px images?
The low resolution washes away details quite a bit. doubling it would still be too blurry/pixellated to 'bootleg' from, but make custom buttons a bit more easy to make.
