Add easy-to-add buttons #2535

Open TheOrgg opened 4 years ago

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

There's a few easily added buttons, and one discovered set that shouldn't need anything other than allowing cards instead of buttons as images.

Easily added:
Julz: https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2492 If you'd prefer it to be round and not "full art," I can do that. I prefer the shrunk full art one at the bottom.

Eberk: https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2504

Space Battles set:(cross this one out; one of the designers doesn't want it on here) https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2496 (Can we use the cards if they're shrunk?)

Hodgepodge Bunny Temple BunnyTempleSmall

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

The two proposed Radicals, GG and Bernie https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2539

blackshadowshade commented 4 years ago

So, I'd really like some discussion on these from others, even just a yea or nay on each.

dwvanstone commented 4 years ago

I trust the research done on these. I think these are fine:

Julz (in 2000 Promos set) Eberk (in new 2010 Promos set) Revising Largo (in MegaTokyo) Bunny Temple (I'd recommend making a Tributes set that fans of the site can make for people/friends/families who have passed away rather than adding to Hodge Podge)

Do any of these have descriptions?

As to Space Battles, the formulas look great but the images aren't 150x150. (They are 180x254.) Also, would we have any troubles going live with this site with the images in Space Battles in terms of copyright? The recipes/names look great. Could these buttons be added with the larger images? Or just added without images?

Dürer Räwg: I get that the second word is GWAR backwards, does the first word have a meaning? All but those three buttons with special powers would be an easy & fun addition. I'd approve.

As for the Free Radicals set: CynCyn: no. I can't read the name nor recipe Loren: no. I can't read the name nor the button recipe Lorrie: yes on the new image Maskin: no. The art on the website now is better (easier to read) than the new one Randy: no. Can't read name/button recipe Tony: no. Can't read the recipe Bernie: Yes! The art is clear. Welcome to the ButtonMen family! D(4) 20 4/8 6/8 D(S) GG: Yes to recipe, no to the art. (Can't read it) I think the recipe is 6 6 D(12) D(24) S

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

The art is from Albrecht Durer. Might be better as Rawg Durer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albrecht_D%C3%BCrer

I'll fiddle with the new Radicals when I get time; the 'cut out' numbers like on the original Maskin are difficult to figure out, and I cannot replicate it just yet. I'll keep trying. EDIT: Take a look at the most recent ones. (I forgot to bold Bernie's dice highlights, but the rest are finished--Bernie wasn't hard to read anyway so I might just leave it like that.)

The artwork in Space Battles was done by one of its creators, so we should be fine as far as copyrights there.

dwvanstone commented 4 years ago

The artwork in Space Battles was done by one of its creators, so we should be fine as far as copyrights there.

But is this the creators' drawings or did the creator simply reuse artwork from the original series? (In which case the creator might be fine with printing their own fan cards but we might have different standards for an online website -- I honestly don't know but wanted to bring it up just in case.)

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

I'll contact them via boardgamegeek again, but it might take a while for them to get back to me. I was under the impression the illustrations were by Sedi Villa, but I'll check.

EDIT: Not her, but by a friend of their's. " using art by another friend and member of PnP Gaming" (from the creator interview on https://buttonmen.fandom.com/wiki/Space_Battles)

blackshadowshade commented 4 years ago

Right, I'll update the images for the Free Radicals then.

scipiohaereticus commented 4 years ago

I'm not as familiar with the history of all these, but I see no problem with Julz, Eberk, Largo and Bunny Temple.

I'd also welcome the Durer Rawg set, I wasn't part of the playtesting at the time but if it passed well enough, a whole new set sounds fun.

I'm no expert on copyright and similar things so I can't really comment on the Space Battles images, but the set seems well thought out and assembled with care. A lot of the appeal comes from the images though, so I'm not sure if I'd like them as much if they were on here without images.

As for the Radicals, I'm also not familiar with their history in exact detail, but if the two new ones somehow belong in that set, I say let them in. I have to agree with devious though, a lot of the art is too dark and unreadable for me. Could we shed a little light on them?

randomlife commented 4 years ago

The more the merrier!

dwvanstone commented 4 years ago

Not her, but by a friend of their's. " using art by another friend and member of PnP Gaming" (from the creator interview on https://buttonmen.fandom.com/wiki/Space_Battles)

I think the art is incredible. Wow. I don't know how to get them to be 150x150.

Take a look at the most recent ones. (I forgot to bold Bernie's dice highlights, but the rest are finished--Bernie wasn't hard to read anyway so I might just leave it like that.)

I had a hard time finding them, but found them in #2541 . Nice! I like 'em!!

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

I whacked out the first few Space Battles in the only square format I could think of. If this works, I'll do the rest like this. Working around the unreadable flavor text might make a few look a bit messy.

Cube1184Square
CylonRaiderSquare DeathStarSquare BattlestarGalacticaSquared ColonialViperSquared

dwvanstone commented 4 years ago

I love these!! The text from the old images can become the descriptions.

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

I'll put the full 24 onto the Space Battles page. I figured out how to get all the stats at the bottom (there were only two I would've flipped, and one looked terrible. I used selective blurring to 'erase' the text.

EDIT: Didn't mean to close this. Oops. Re-opened.

dwvanstone commented 4 years ago

I'll put the full 24 onto the Space Battles page.

They look great! If you want the description to go with the buttons I'd suggest adding them to #2496.

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

Done, but someone needs to double-check my handiwork.

Also, did a little change to one of the new Radicals to highlight the figure in the photo. Should we keep the old Maskin or swap it for the new for consistency?

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

Are we good to go on all except SpaceBattles?

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

So I was looking through 50States, the closest set to Fanatics, and noted a few inactive buttons that look like they would be fine to add.

k(7) g(9) (12) F(15) (X) Arizona

H(4) v(11) h(20) (4/20)? (R) Connecticut

n(4) m(5) k(8) F(13) d(Y) Hawaii

n^(6) f(8) D(9) (11) k(T) Iowa

None of these have unsupported skills. Is there something I'm missing?

blackshadowshade commented 4 years ago

Yes, you're missing a number of issues:

1802 outlines the konstant fire bug, which affects Arizona and Hawaii, and potentially Iowa if the D(9) becomes a fire die.

The problem with Connecticut is that I don't know how to interpret (4/20)?, thus there's no functional code to deal with it.

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

An option die that randomly chooses the size each time it is used? That's how I'd interpret it (and if you hadn't discussed about it, I can see why it wouldn't be functional.

Looking at the official rules, I think that formatting works. "The Mood Swing is a variant of the Turbo, except that whenever it is rolled it changes randomly to a new size."
I know a Turbo can stay the same when someone uses it, so the random swing should have a chance at staying the same Option size when the Moody Option activates.

(sorry if I'm bugging you with all these questions. I was just digging around and one page led to the next)

dwvanstone commented 4 years ago

I think, from reading above, these are the "easy-to-add buttons" (i.e. no outstanding issues):

Julz: #2492 Eberk: #2504 Largo: #2488 #2489 Bunny Temple: (5) (5) (5) (5) (V) artwork in original post, I'm fine with it in Hodge Podge

(Should Bunny Temple be in her own separate thread so she doesn't get lost?)

Anna Lee, Bishop, Brad, Brenda, Brent, Cardie, Cheery, Chuck, Cuddy, Dave, Derks, Dickie, Don, Gorman, Hedy, Hunter, Jamie, Maggie, Matt Ron, Reilly, Smoot, Stamps, Zedna: #2507

We already have the Free Radicals (including the two new buttons) actively being worked on in #2541

I recommend moving any further discussions about Connecticut to #1927.

I recommend moving any further discussions about Space Battles to #2496.

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

Sanctum Rare: Wumpus. Neat that it exists, kinda boring as a button.

WumpusBMO

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

So where are we on these? As far as I can tell, everything was cool other than Space Battles. We rectified the art issues with Radicals.

Wumpus, Yea or Nae? It's a legit rare from the company.

TheOrgg commented 4 years ago

Also, is there any copy-paste work I can do to help get the new items ready, or other non-programming stuff I can do to help?

blackshadowshade commented 4 years ago

Just for completeness (I say that @TheOrgg has already seen this), I'm just waiting for us to get #2389 accepted before adding further buttons.

TheOrgg commented 3 years ago

Two more with only Standard Dice. Welcome the Standard Action Button Men! BMO-StdAction-Fernando150px BMO-StdAction-Edda150px These are a little 'zoomed in' because I cropped some of the 'bleed' out. I thought they'd look better zoomed in a little on the BMO site. https://buttonmen.fandom.com/wiki/Standard_Action

Another concern I have about these... Now that Anno is creating another set, I'm worried that it'll get overshadowed if a huge deluge of new buttons just pop up out of the blue all at the same time. I'd like these to have a little chance to shine, even if many of them are generic. Is it possible to maybe get just these two, Wumpus, Eberk, Julz, and Bunny added the next update? Only Julz isn't purely Standard Dice, and she only has the Speed skill.

blackshadowshade commented 3 years ago

Sorry, but no new buttons can be added until we get #2389 done, due to the many potential conflicts with the very complex codebase change.

TheOrgg commented 3 years ago

This is ta post BSS described as potentially helpful, just for a summary so we don't lose track adding the new sets when that's possible.

Easy to add, all Standard Dice or Option Dice: Scott Pilgrim: https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2703 Standard Action (above) Wumpus (Rare for Sanctum, above) Bunny Temple (Tribute, Hodgepodge set[?]) XXXenophile fan additions(?): https://buttonmen.fandom.com/wiki/Partially_Created_Fan_Sets

Option Dice: Eberk ("1999-2020 Promos" set, assuming we're taking @jl8e 's suggestion) https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2504

Speed Dice: Julz ("1999-2010 Promos") https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2492

Doppelganger Dice: GG and Bernie (Free Radicals)

Currently in testing: CorpWorld, Fanatics 2021 https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2664 https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2346

New Set with new P-Swing dice: Durer Rawg (mostly, minus special characters): https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2507

A huge set we probably don't need but might as well have since it exists: Sailor Moon Crystal: https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2500

New Buttons that, if they're going to be put on the site, probably need a test site to make sure there's no bugs. Cheapass James https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2494 Con Man 2020 https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2558 Enjileon (Cryptonom set. Can't find the issue I thought I made for it...) https://buttonmen.fandom.com/wiki/Cryptonom 150Enjelion

Sets/Buttons that'll be grey'd out, but if we're adding, we might as well add them to avoid annoyance later: Buzzing Weasel (last button to get active?) (though the 'suck' skill might be fun for a Fanatic...)

Monstrous Musicians set https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2497 https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2661

Button Ponies https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2495 (I'll fix up 150px ones for it and post it on its issue page)

Ice Cream Warriors (in a future a far, far time away) https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2553

Warlords(and then we'll fix the recipe when I can find out what the skill is) https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2616

Button Murderers (Lucky!) https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2349

DriveThruCards Customs Mariko: [(10) (10) (X) (X) (X)] Natch: [(4) (20) (X) (X) (X)] Priestess: [(6) (8) (X) (X) (X)] Shae: [(12) (20) (X) (X) (X)]

Arcane: [p(4) (10,10) F(12) (X) s(X)] Vermin Supreme: [(4) (20) (4,8) (6,12) (6,20)] William Wardicus [(8) s(10) s(12) s(20) s(X)]

Button Ben: [(4) p(6) z(12) s(20) (X)] In Nomine: [(R!/S!) (T!/U!) (V?/X?) (W!/Y!) (Z)] Sniper Wolf: [s(5) s(7) sc(10) z(14) s(U!)]

Recipe fixes: Classic Fanatics:
ABCGi (X,X) to (X!,Y!) Cest Wha has a pk(2) on image, p(2) on recipe Gman has stinger but rage on image Prof. Booty has last two dice swapped, update recipe order RavenBlack has a Mighty in art, but a Weak in recipe.

Steve (Bridge and Tunnel): Update recipe as specified by Steve himself (two that would randomly occur)

If I think of other button-level fixes needed, I'll post them here.

blackshadowshade commented 3 years ago

Just to summarise a conversation I've been having with @TheOrgg, I'll be aiming to put in one big pull request adding buttons with recipes that are vanilla or have skill combinations that already occur in existing buttons. This should only really require automated testing and should thus be easy to accept. It will also reduce the potential for code conflict in our test code that is caused by multiple small additions of buttons and button sets.

After that goes through, we start addressing potentially more problematic button recipes more slowly in multiple pull requests, which will be tested both by testers and RandomAI.

blackshadowshade commented 3 years ago

Regarding the recipe fixes, I think this needs to be addressed on a separate issue, since these can be somewhat complicated.

TheOrgg commented 3 years ago

Also, since the total number of buttons is important for the base code, adding the sets that will then be autodeactivated from Staging to Production allows just the skill to be worked on, and not have to worry about adding the set after the skill is implemented.

Essentially, a biiiiig batch of buttons is much easier work than half a dozen or more small batches being added. The same amount of work has to happen each time.

jl8e commented 3 years ago

I've got to ask:

A huge set we probably don't need but might as well have since it exists: Sailor Moon Crystal: #2500

Why is this the only set characterized this way? It's a physically extant set, unlike most of the others.

TheOrgg commented 3 years ago

I own the physical ones. They're great to play with.

However, many of the Sailor Moon Crystal characters are either near or exact duplicates of a Sailor Moon already on the site or identical with a different Iconic Special Ability. Since the Iconics will take a while to get to, it doesn't feel needed at the moment to me.

TheOrgg commented 3 years ago

Is my January 26th post enough to work on the big update, or do I need to do a bit more work, @blackshadowshade ?

TheOrgg commented 2 years ago

Not sure where to file this one...

https://buttonmen.fandom.com/wiki/Fight_City_Drawn-In_characters 150pxTilton

TheOrgg commented 1 year ago

I think the only set discovered since these was Twin Sword Training, https://github.com/buttonmen-dev/buttonmen/issues/2854 . If we find set 2 of TST, we can put it with the first.

(bumping this, as @blackshadowshade recommended)

Almost forgot the big block of sets Dana rediscovered not too long ago! (also, I realized the list gives us a timeline of the Buttonmen Online sets' release!!)

Re Chronicles of Amber: "Dierdre" looked weird to me, so i checked, and per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Chronicles_of_Amber_characters it is in fact "Deirdre" as i would have expected.

Edited. I'm not familiar with them more than just knowing it exists and is about time travel.

The Hodgepodge/Avatars flavor texts, in general, suffer from the problem where the male characters' texts are about things, and the female characters' texts are about men/about sex/vaguely lascivious.

I think it's obvious why, as a women's hockey fan, i'm not cool with the idea of having the only female hockey player on the site have exactly the Courtney Kennedy text, and would need to see some edits. I've been editing this comment for 15 minutes to try to spell it out, and it's just making me mad, so i'm going to put it down for now --- volunteers for a general edit pass would be terrific, whenever we get to the point where that's helpful.

I would've said "a multiverse", I don't think there's time travel but now I'm not 100% sure, it's been a while. :^ )

Honestly, I don't think I have even read the flavor texts except for Dr. Oche. I'm fine with them getting edited or changed; flavor text is the least important thing to me in preserving BM (though finding new original ones is exciting, if it is problematic... well, BM is a product of its time and sometimes we see how awful things were)

You're probably right. I know next-to-nothing about Amber.

This is useful context on how you're thinking about this --- thanks for sharing, and especially appreciate the carte blanche to edit, which we're certainly going to have to do to bring in many of these buttons.

BM is a product of its time, but, also, we're making a BM server now, in our time. The flavor texts and art communicate what kind of culture we have, and what players we want to feel welcome. I don't have a magic bullet or answer for that overall issue, but when we're considering adding more buttons, i want to mind the first rule of holes. (When you find yourself in one, stop digging.)

I think we're on the same page. I'm the guy that was stringently for editing Updog's artwork so we don't offend new users.

Onto other things, digging around, these seem to be the most highly regarded artworks for the Amber characters, the French Terot deck. https://www.onirym.fr/Une-vision-d-Ambre/Illustrations/Illustrations-de-Florence-Magnin.html

I'm going to try and get high resolution versions, as those there look pretty bad.

@blackshadowshade This is a bit of a jumble, but this is the thread-of-things-that-can-be-added. The ones I really would like to see are Ponies and Scott Pilgrim, and I'm sure old players would like the Amber set, too.

blackshadowshade commented 1 month ago

Did we ever resolve the image issue for the Amber set? (as in, copyright, which images we're going to use)

TheOrgg commented 1 month ago

I haven't had time. It's hard to get copies of that deck in good quality. Apparently there was a kickstarter for it, though, so I should take another look.

Has any thought been given to adding Venn (and perhaps the other buttons from the math set) that Nonce created? I'd love to play Venn in particular on the prd site! https://buttonmen.fandom.com/wiki/The_Math_Set Venn
