Thanks for the report, I'll try to look at this soon. Pandoc changed some behavior when it went to 2.0 and I've already tracked down a few other bugs. I really should make a better regression test suite...

nix installed 8.5 (because I was 2 weeks behind HEAD - harrumph) - I just updated my nixpkgs repo and now I have 8.6.1 which works so I am going to close this.

Oh, good. Glad to know it was a bug I already fixed! =) Though now I don't have a kick in the pants to make a regression test suite anymore...
