Standard for wall mounted LED lit panels.

We are slowly starting to unleash the full power of the vacuum forming table and as a part of that I would like to have some kind of standard for the LED's that will be incorporated into the panels.

My questions at the moment are:

1. Type of LED to be used (or are they interchangeable)
2. Type of controller to be used and how to command said controllers if I want to eg. give the station an full alert and make it blink red or make individual parts do their own thing. MQTT?
3. ?? (what else, I have no idea what I'm doing here)

I want to create something on the cheap side, if possible. Something that can be easily expanded by adding more panels with more LED's. I want to create a reasonable instructions page for it so that I will also know what to do later on (and others can expand the project or tweak it later).

it would be possible to create a esp8266/NodeMCU firmware that is listening to the stations mqtt and maybe can be maybe also add support for Mpr121 touch sensors to add "buttons" (with copperfoil behind the formed plastic)

i have a few of the mpr121 and also want to add buttons to one panel in the tiefgang already positivly tested copperfoil and the vacuum plastic that we are using

I'm currently building an ESP8266 and c-beam MQTT based bar state - clock. Would it be possible to get a mpr121 for some tests to integrate it?

i'm not sure but maybe i have added them to on of the Micro controller zoo boxes Maybe in one of the typical Chinese yellow envelopes
