I looked this up and it is entirely permissible so long as with it you don't hinder the GPL license and allow your contributed work to also be distributed under the GPL license. I guess one has to assume the GPL phrase below the personal copyright statement is doing just that, but to me it is vague.

I am removing all copyright notices by me in favor of acknowledgment.

So this is ready to merge.
