Screensaver has stopped working #118

Hi there,

When I try to install the screensaver following your instructions, i get a blank/black preview and whenever I press Preview, it says "screensaver has stopped working". Tried a couple of the FAQ things that seemed relevant, didn't seem to help. Don't believe I have an aggressive firewall or anything to block the screensaver...

Turns out - it might be related to a corporate network filter (it works when tethered to my phone). Is there a way for the cached content to be displayed when on the corporate network after it has been saved instead of immediately crashing?

cDima commented 7 years ago

Yes, the bleeding edge version caches the .json file from apple as well, to work fully offline. I'd like to fix the app so it doesn't crash, not sure what part of the request failed in such a horrible way.

@matthewnlee Could you open the Event Viewer on your PC? Just type "event" into the "Ask me anything" box in the task bar and Event Viewer should come up as an option.

screenshot 2017-03-29 20 17 54

Then within Event Viewer if you pick System Tools -> Event Viewer -> Windows Logs -> Application you should see some errors with a red exclamation icon that say ".Net Runtime" for the Source. If you select one of them, and find one that has "Application: Aerial.scr" in the text, and copy and paste the content in that box this should give cDima more of an idea where to look to start on a fix. The wee box only shows about three lines at a time as you can see above but there should be about six or seven. Something like this...

Application: Aerial.scr
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: System.ArgumentException
   at System.IO.Directory.CreateDirectory(System.String)
   at Caching.Setup()
   at ScreenSaver.Program.Main(System.String[])

Hope this makes sense.

@alistairmcmillan Thanks. Below is what I'm seeing in the Event Viewer

Application: Aerial.scr Framework Version: v4.0.30319 Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception. Exception Info: System.ArgumentException at System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptObjectDeserializer.DeserializePrimitiveObject() at System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptObjectDeserializer.DeserializeInternal(Int32) at System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptObjectDeserializer.BasicDeserialize(System.String, Int32, System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer) at System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer.Deserialize(System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer, System.String, System.Type, Int32) at System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer.Deserialize[System.__Canon, mscorlib, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089] at ScreenSaver.AerialContext.GetMovies() at ScreenSaver.ScreenSaverForm.ScreenSaverForm_Load(System.Object, System.EventArgs) at System.Windows.Forms.Form.OnLoad(System.EventArgs) at System.Windows.Forms.Form.SetVisibleCore(Boolean) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.Show() at ScreenSaver.Program.ShowScreenSaver() at ScreenSaver.Program.Main(System.String[])

@cDima I've been able to get a couple of the videos to work now! I've had a couple of issues, however...

a) Sometimes when the screensaver ("times-in"), the screen will just go black, from 30-120 seconds at a time it seems, before one of the clips will pop in. This blackout period sometimes also occurs between clips (i.e. switching from one clip to another after the first one is done...so I'll see London's complete run, 60 seconds of black and then New York or something else will pop in). Other times it'll smoothly move to the next clip. This seems to occur 1/3 of the time, almost seeming like the program can only load 2/3 of the clips.

b) This morning I was running my laptop with the primary screen and an external monitor. The primary screen ran the screensaver fine, while the external monitor showed the attached screenshots (hope you can read them, didn't think I could screenshot DURING a screensaver run). Note that I was able to get the screensaver to mirror on both screens yesterday, so it seems that things are performing inconsistently. (EDIT: The screenshots rotated automatically, but if you click them they should re-orient. Sorry about that. The Windows Media Player error is what appears when I click "Continue")

Hi, After running your awesome screensaver for a year, I'm experiencing the same type of issue. As of two or three days ago it never successfully launches and instead shows "ScreenSaver not working" when it launches as well as when I "Test" it in Windows Explorer. Any guidance would be appreciated. It's probably the biggest contributor to making this old Windows box tolerable. Thanks. LG
