I see this exact same behavior, also on current Windows 10. Perhaps this will help: https://stackoverflow.com/a/10919021/55487
Edit: note that I'm using the 4K version, not sure if that matters.
I also see this behaviour, even with older versions I guess, also on Windows 10. Actually this is what stopped me from using Aerial, because I often have to run tasks overnight and I hate to find my display being turned on the entire night. Of course I can always turn it off manually...but people tend to forget :) I hope someone with the necessary skills finds time to fix this. But anyway, even as it is it looks just great and thanks for all the hard work that already went into this.
Just chiming in to add my voice to this bug. I also have this problem on the newest version of Aerial and the newest update of Windows. It would be great to get this fixed this as it is the one issue keeping me from using Aerial as my main screensaver.
Unfortunately same issue over here won't go to sleep after 30min as I have setup in power settings. Worked without screen saver
Just installed it on a new computer a view day's ago. For now I Just manually power off my monitor because I like it to much but if this issue can be fixed that would be awesome.
thanks for the great screensaver
we can't possibly be the only ones here having this issue. I have these screensavers set on business pcs at work and now i am realizing that those pcs are probably still awake due to this issue.. why hasnt it been fixed?

With all due respect, not only is this a free code project - it’s out of development.
I’d also like to politely suggest considering the tone in which your comment may be read - it comes off as very entitled as you are effectively complaining about a 3 year old free product.
You put it on your work machines, so it’s your responsibility to either fix it yourself or uninstall it.
This is github. This is free download of someone’s hobby project. There is no manager to complain to.
What you should be doing is cosying up, complimenting the developer and praying they choose to help you out of the kindness of their heart.
... that being said - there are some other forks of this project out there; perhaps investigate and report back.
I am using the latest version of Windows 10. My computer's power plan is set to have my display sleep after 25 minutes of inactivity. The Aerial 6.1 screen saver is set to become active after 5 minutes of inactivity. Aerial activates as specified, but the display will not sleep after the specified period of 25 minutes have elapsed. (I have changed Windows multimedia advanced settings to allow the computer to sleep when multimedia is being shared.)
If one of the installed Windows 10 screensavers is selected, the display sleeps as specified. Therefore, I believe Aerial's behavior is the problem. Is there a power setting I need to change in Windows to override Aerial's continued activity beyond the specified sleep point? If not, it would seem that Aerial needs to be modified to allow the display to sleep as specified.
