Fast-forward master branch to catch up with v1.7.8 tag #18

The latest release v1.7.8 tag was ahead of the master branch, which is rather unexpected, and led me to download an old version of this code.

So this pull request is just for a git merge --ff v1.7.8 into the master branch.
