Hi @jonathancolledge no I didn't know anything about these devices. There is a whole world around it! Cool! I found this very simple project https://github.com/vicktor/FreeStyleLibre-NFC-Reader/blob/master/app/FreeStyleLibre/app/src/main/java/com/socialdiabetes/freestylelibre/Abbott.java did you give it a test with your device?
I was wondering how could integrate this on QZ? I mean it seems to me that they are not realtime data, but at least, 5 minute frequency, isn't it?
I found a list of others here. It seems that the Freestyle Libre 3 reads glucose every minute, I don't know about the others.
I guess the use case might be for cyclists to correlate glucose level with how they are feeling. And to see how to fuel themselves on long training rides. They are banned by the UCI for races though. I would just be a case of tapping the phone (or QZ) on the device to get a readout during the ride. I'm out so sure about this idea though as fit files would need a custom field or something and with such a wide variety of devices and none will communicate in the same way.
Cool! Maybe we can try to ask on the group about this? With nfc it could be easy indeed to get the value. In the fit file there is already a field for this
Have you come across Supersapiens? Very expensive continuous glucose monitoring for sports people https://www.supersapiens.com/en-GB/
However, it is just using the Abbot Freestyle Libre (version 2, I think). https://www.freestyle.abbott/uk-en/home.html This is a pod that spikes (doesn't hurt) into your arm and lasts 2 weeks. It monitors your glucose and you download the data using NFC by tapping the phone on the pod.
Some Pros use glucose monitoring https://www.eurosport.co.uk/cycling/strade-bianche-1/2023/jayco-alula-rider-kristen-faulkner-disqualified-from-strade-bianche-for-wearing-glucose-monitor_sto9509288/story.shtml
The Freestyle Libre costs £50 per pod so much cheaper than Supersapiens. I have one on now, linked to the Freestyle libre app. (Not part of Supersapiens and my dad paid for it, not using it for exercise, but I had a try
). Anyhow, it is quite good as a learning thing. I tapped my phone to our several times during my exercise this morning.
I won't be using it again, as I don't need it, but someday someone might want it. Abbot seem to have locked down their ecosystem so only the Freestyle Libre Link app can read it - there are a few Github projects that seem to have tried this, but they are many years old. I tried with a generic NFC reader and it got nothing.
Anyway, I just thought I'd draw your eye, to look out for glucose monitoring in the future. There is another device on the market and maybe more hackable devices will come someday.
