HR on iPad issue #1529

Closed lalgaze closed 1 year ago

lalgaze commented 1 year ago

Describe the bug Hi Roberto,

You asked I submit here the issue. When I start QZ on the iPad, it doesn’t read the HR or cadence even after following the steps you suggested (start on Ipad, then phone, then watch).

Today the HR wouldn’t even show on the QZ phone app when run alone.

Expected behavior Expecting the HR and cadence to show on peloton on ipad

Desktop (please complete the following information):

Append a debug log

Follow this guide https://github.com/cagnulein/qdomyos-zwift/wiki/How-do-i-get-the-debug-log-in-case-something-doesn't-work%3F

cagnulein commented 1 year ago

in this log i can't see any connection to your fitness device. Is this the issue? I guess the iphone app is stealing the connection to it so. you have first to open the qz app on the ipad, and then the app on the iphone and the watch. Let me know @lalgaze

lalgaze commented 1 year ago

That’s what I do. Open iPad then phone then watch. The tiles on iPad show all but the HR and HR and cadence do not show on peloton

so you attached the wrong debug log. in the debug log there is no connection at all unfortunately. Check in the qz directory, probably there are other files for that date

This was last ride. It all shows on phone and the peloton app will pick up hr and cadence from QZ. But when I open iPad app first, it doesn’t find QZ as app.

Here is log from iPhone that did work.

I checked the log, and as the the previous one, the iPad can't find your bike over bluetooth. I don't understand the phrase "it doesn't find QZ as app", what do you mean?

From the log it seems that the iphone is stealing the schwinn connection from the ipad. Maybe was running in background? did you try to fully close QZ on the iphone?

lalgaze commented 1 year ago

On peloton, in The settings, you connect to device for cadence (ic4 in my case) and HR (generally Apple Watch when launch peloton app on watch). When I open QZ on the phone, in the peloton app it shows QZ as the options for both and the peloton app tiles show on the peloton app with this info populated. When I open the iPad, the cadence shows on the QZ app on the pad but no HR and neither of these show on the peloton app on the iPad. And QZ doesn’t show as an option for those connections.

so you are running peloton and qz on the same ipad? that's the issue, you can't bridge bluetooth on the same device. it's an apple limitation. anyway in the log I can't see a connection from the bike to the ipad at all, but since you're saying that you can see the tiles on the ipad, i guess you just send me the wrong log (but it's not the issue actually).

Let me know

lalgaze commented 1 year ago

So I can't then use the double screen function on the iPad to see the QZ overlain atop the peloton. It shows all the info I need on the tiles except for the HR

@lalgaze you should be able to see hr on the qz app on ipad but for sure not on the peloton app in that scenario. Would be ok for you? In this case we can continue to investigate it

If you want we can investigate it, but only if you're fine to have hr only on qz on the iPad and not on the peloton app. If so we can investigate, otherwise it's useless because the hr bridge can't happen on the same device

I understand. Yes. Would like to use on iPad. I can float the QZ atop to see the tiles needed.

ok so with peloton app and qz on the iphone closed, open qz on the ipad and in the advanced settings, select the ic bike in the manual device . press ok and restart qz on the ipad. you should then see the tile. if so open the qz app on the watch and press start, then you should see the hr on the ipad. if so, open peloton on the ipad keeping qz on the side view and bind also the cadence on peloton

let me know and in case send me a debug log from the ipad

Didn’t work. At first I was able to add the bike and it would show the information in tiles except for heart rate. Then it wouldn’t find the bike intermittently when I tried the process again. I attached the last one where the bike was added but none of the information was picked up and shown in tiles. debug-Sun_Jun_25_16_53_24_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_17_03_21_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_16_55_52_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_17_00_40_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_16_54_15_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_17_01_50_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_16_47_02_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_17_07_17_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_16_52_17_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_17_00_58_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_17_02_27_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_16_58_08_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_16_54_30_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_16_53_36_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_17_05_21_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_16_51_50_2023.log debug-Sun_Jun_25_16_46_18_2023.log

cagnulein commented 1 year ago

@lalgaze the problem in these logs is that you set your watch as a heart device

"heart_rate_belt_name" QVariant(QString, "Louis’s Apple Watch")

you have to leave it to "Disabled" press ok and restart qz.

Let me know

lalgaze commented 1 year ago

That was it! Thanks. Works now. The only remaining issue is that the resistance of the bike doesn’t calculate correctly and show in the QZ app. I used power to make a chart to synch ic4 with peloton and the peloton resistance in QZ match up exactly to the converted resistance on the chart below. But the cadence on the bike isn’t reflected correctly in QZ. The picture shows the conversions. In other words, on the QZ app the bicycle’s native resistance doesn’t show as it is actually on the bike. I haven’t been able to use the options to adjust it even close. image

cagnulein commented 1 year ago

hi @lalgaze great! For the resistance: your bike doesn't send the resistance over bluetooth. Anyway QZ has an internal way to calculated it based con cadence and power. Enable the "Calc. Resistance" setting in the schwinn setting to enable it. Of course it will not be exactly the resistance of your bike, because, as i said, your bike doesn't send it. But it's a workaround Let me know

cagnulein commented 1 year ago

also i don't understand your question about cadence: cadence is directly from your bike. but it's not about that chart. that chart is about resistance, i'm confused about this. Please detail it better, thanks!

lalgaze commented 1 year ago

I mis wrote it. I meant resistance. Not cadence. The cadence is all good. I’ll try the switch and let you know. Is there a formula within QZ that makes the resistance calculation that can be adjusted to reflect that within the chart?

cagnulein commented 1 year ago

so are you talking about peloton resistance or resistance from your bike? The idea behind QZ is that you don't need anymore to check about the resistance of your bike, but you have to enable the peloton resistance tile and the target peloton resistance tile. Then your "job" is keeping the peloton resistance aligned to the target peloton resistance.

Also, there are 2 setting (peloton resistance offset and gain) that can help you to change the conversion if you don't like it

lalgaze commented 1 year ago

Now it works perfectly with peloton. Thanks! I’d like to use QZ with other programs than just peloton and not having to look down at the IC screen helps if i just look at projected tv instead. I don’t want to change the Peloton. numbers showing on QZ. I want the tile with the native IC resistance to show the IC bike’s resistance value. Will the gain and offset do that?

cagnulein commented 1 year ago

I want the tile with the native IC resistance to show the IC bike’s resistance value. Will the gain and offset do that?

nope, you have to use the setting that I mentioned before "Calc. Resistance" or if you are still not happy use the "Resistance Alternative Calc.".

You can check #1236 and #521 for more details

As I said the bike itself is not sending the resistance the metric, so there is no perfect way to have the resistance on a app for your bike, but I guess the current method is quite good (it was validated for a lot of schwinn users)

lalgaze commented 1 year ago

So on last ride with resistance switch on it wasn’t close and with alternate calculation it was even worse. Also, the HR stayed in the same spot on tile on iPad. It wasn’t reading HR changes. Watch was, but it wasn’t reflected in tile. Had to start peloton watch app. debug-Wed_Jun_28_16_18_50_2023.log debug-Wed_Jun_28_16_07_49_2023.log

cagnulein commented 1 year ago

about the resistance i'm thinking that maybe your bike is not calibrated? since the algorithm is based on wattage and cadence, if the wattage is not right, the result will be a mess. Anyway in the log there is no way for me to compare real resistance to the qz resistance. So i need a reference to understand your issue: maybe a video showing me the bike resistance and qz resistance in different spot?

for the hr: in this cases, try to restart the qz app on the phone. it seems that maybe ios killing it and so the ipad didn't received any new hr

lalgaze commented 1 year ago

This was the method used that led to the chart in picture Again, QZ peloton resistance levels track exactly with that chart and the resistance shown on the bikes meter.

https://www.lambertslately.com/how-to-convert-peloton-resistance-schwinn-ic4

cagnulein commented 1 year ago

sorry, maybe it's my english (i'm italian), but i don't understand this phrase "track exactly with that chart and the resistance shown on the bikes meter."

so qz shows exactly the resistance that you see on the bike meter? please share some pictures of the issue, so this will avoid any confusion :)

thanks

IMG_1925 Hi Roberto. Sorry I have not responded but I was out of town for a while. By the way, your English is better than most of my compatriots here in America.

I am attaching the chart that I used to calculate the resistance conversion in the picture that I sent you before. In other words, at the power given the peloton resistance equals the IC4 resistance on the prior picture at those two different RPMs.The bike has been calibrated and the peloton resistance showing on QZ matches exactly to these conversions on my bike but the plain (non peloton) resistance doesn’t match on the QZ app. IMG_0006

so the equation will be y = 0,0007x3 - 0,0763x2 + 4,1619x - 75,788

so if I'm understanding right, I can add a 3rd calculation method following this. Do you agree?

lalgaze commented 1 year ago

That looks right. I know there are other Schwinn bike owners I’ve seen online with the same conversion so it should help others. I think the newer bikes may have different distances from magnets to wheel.

Hi Robert. I’m out of town for a few weeks so won’t be able to install or try it until I return. I’ll let you know. Thanks for checking, though!

So real close if I switch on all three calibration switches. Each individually isn’t close. I’ve attached a video. And will upload logs. Also, watch isn't reading or transmitting HR.

in all these 3 logs, you have always 2 switches enabled. you have to keep only the Res. Alternative Calc. v3 enabled and restart qz. Always remember that the calculation is based on the peloton one that qz shows, so it will never be perfect.
