I think if you remove \sloppy
from the main tex file this should be fixed. But then the text will go out of margin in some places.
I don't quite understand the rules of hyphenation in English, but I know that we can force Latex to hyphenate differently if required by using - where it is appropriate. For example, to hyphenate position in the first -i (if needed add:
\hyphenation{pos-ition}
to the preamble.
According to Merrian-Webster both words seem correctly hyphenated.
