I Still can't understand what was the real benefit of that "big gif transfer
code rewrite" since it broke a lot of games/stuff

It fixed a lot of stuff, that was the reason.

Ok, but IMHO fixing stuff at the price of breaking games is generally not worth
the price.

You misunderstand. The new gif unit was needed to fix many games but since it's
more complex and not fully understood yet (timing problems as well) *a few*
games broke.
After we're done fixing the new gif unit those old and the newly fixed games
will work.
The old gif unit didn't even exist. It was just a bunch of workarounds that
more or less made games happy.

Almost a year has passed since that revision, so I thought the broken games
were "lost forever"...at least is nice to hear you're still working on it.
Keep it up.

could you possibly try the build from this thread to see if it makes a
difference

I'm not expecting it too but it would be nice if it was the same issue ;p

I've just noticed it's the same developing house, so it's possible it might do.

Fixed in r5373, either make sure your auto gamefixes are enabled, failing that,
enable the OPH Flag Gamefix manually.

Is there any hope that issue 1094 will be fixed soon in a similar way or is
that a completely different issue?

If it's not already fixed it's probably completely different.

Yes, unfortunately it is still not fixed (tried with r5390)

Then this is a different issue. Please describe what happens in detail.
