Gran Turismo 4 GSDX Race Start Crash in dx9 mode (hardware mode) #187

[The following is a template to help you fill out a more informative
report]

Note:
Many games do not run yet, or have known problems. Please do not report
those games without giving any more information. That means reports like
"Game XYZ crashes" are not helpful. Instead try to include as much debug
information as possible. The last 5 console messages for example, or if the
crashes can be circumvented / fixed by another configuration would help
much more.

--------------------------------------

1) Did the game ever work correctly (i.e. not have this problem) on the
Official PCSX2 build or an earlier version of PCSX2 playground?
(If so, please specify the latest pcsx2-playground or Official revision
that last worked.)

A very long time ago in gsdx. After later revisions (sorry this happened so
long ago I`m not sure of the exact revision number) the crash has occured
ever since.

2) What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Run Gran Turismo 4 in directx 9 mode (hardware)
2. Go to start a race on any track
3. Wait for the emulator to crash as soon as the count down for a race
starting occurs. Note that if you start a race in software mode it starts
and races flawlessly besides having terrible speeds. Or you could start a
race in software mode then switch to hardware and it runs fine besides
freezes/crashes occuring if you smash into a wall.

3) What exactly happens when you experience this issue (listing any console
errors or screen output you recieve)?

No unusual messages.

4) What version of PCSX2 are you using? On what operating system?

pcsx2 rev 1058. GSDX rev 1076.

5) Please provide any additional information below.

This bug has been in gsdx for an extremelly long time. Be great to see this
fixed. Its definately a hardware related bug since races start fine in
software mode plus the crash doesn`t occur at all in ZeroGS.

Also, I'd like a confirmation from someone [if possible] .. is this bug
exclusive to
DX9 or does it affect both DX9 and DX10?

Going by the thread on the forums, those that use dx10 are able to start races
just
fine on atleast half of the tracks. I obviously cant confirm this though so I
dont
have Windows Vista and therefore dont have direct X 10.

The only reason when GSDX crashes in GT4 for me it's when i set vertical
iternal
resolution more than double native, horisontal seems to works with more
numbers, but
be sure that vertical isn't more than double native
1024 for PAL
896 for NTSC

Cept you`d be playing it in dx10 to even get that far. And this threads about
the dx9
crash.

The crash in dx 9 hw appears when the game tries to render motion blur .You can
just
skip that effect and enter 408p mode in video output .The game is perfectly
playable
for me if i do so.But that mode removes many graphical aditions(motion blur
,bloom
lightning -so the sky becomes strange like it was clouded but it isnt)if you
want
normal graphics lightning go for dx10 hw mode it renders bloom alright(if you
don't
enter 408p mode) in moments when blur should be aplied on the screen the game
cuts
and goes on so no problem only problem with dx10 hw is that you wont have any
oncar
reflections

This crash happened or still happens due to a memory shortage.
The game is doing some effect that stresses the texture cache a lot.
Nothing much can be done about it, except some config options (hacks) that
bypass the problem.
