Please Confirm: AMAZING Potential New Medication Mapping Verifier #111

Closed callahantiff closed 5 years ago

callahantiff commented 5 years ago

@LEHunter @mgkahn @tdbennett -

As an update/reminder, last month we lost one of our wonderful PharmD's medication mapping verifiers. Luckily for me, @trinklek was able to help me with an AMAZING back-up plan.

Last week, I was able to connect with Whitley Yi, who is an outstanding and very accomplished PharmD, currently working in industry who is willing to help provide a second round of mapping...without requiring compensation!! Whitley is currently working at start-up, which is also doing work in this area (see the description she provided of her company below).

Well Dot, Inc is a new company focused on disrupting healthcare through a differentiated consumer experience and a world-class data & analytics engine to drive engagement and behavior change. It is a concierge service that will sit on top of a company's health plan and serve as the interface between its members and the healthcare ecosystem, also providing care management and wellness services to drive sustained engagement and improve health.

Before moving forward, we want to make sure her position at her start-up does not present any potential conflicts of interest to either of us or put the future of our work at risk. Whitley spoke with her Manager, who did NOT identify any potential issues with her helping with this work, assuming she assists outside of work and work hours. I am now reaching out to you to confirm that you are OK with us bringing her on as well as provide you an opportunity to voice any concerns you may have.

Please let me know your thoughts on this as soon as possible as if it is OK to move forward, I would like to get her up to speed ASAP.

@trinklek - thank you so much for your continued support of my work, I am so grateful and honored for this opportunity to work with you! πŸ™ πŸ™‡β€β™€

I don't have any concerns. Just to be clear and avoid any misunderstanding later, you might put your agreement about what will be done in writing.

Agree with @LEHunter that a mutually agreed upon and signed scope of work is a good idea.

@mgkahn - No, I also though that initially, but I confirmed with Whitley that there is not a public website available yet.

callahantiff commented 5 years ago

@LEHunter @tdbennett - great idea, I think that's a good call. Is there a template that you are aware of that i should use for this? If not, @mgkahn does COMPASS have a good example that I could repurpose?

LEHunter commented 5 years ago

I wouldn’t suggest working from a template. Just write down what she will do, and how she will be credited for it (co-authorship, acknowledgements, etc.) and that no other compensation will be given. Might also state that no intellectual property (i.e. patentable discovery) is expected to come out of this work. That should cover all the bases.

@LEHunter @mgkahn - great idea! If you think that an email is sufficient, then I will go that route. How does the following sound?

Whitley Yi's work on the PheKnowVec project will include:

  1. Helping perform manual verification of computer-generated and human-derived mappings between clinical terminology and vocabulary concepts and codes.
  2. Aid with suggestion of or modification to existing phenotype definitions and contribute to the generation, implementation, and testing or novel phenotypes.
  3. Participate in the drafting of manuscripts and conference presentations.

For this work, she will be credited with co-authorship on resulting manuscripts and conference presentations. No other forms of compensation for this work will be given. She acknowledges that no intellectual property (i.e. patentable discovery) is expected to come out of this work.

@trinklek - what do you think? Am I forgetting anything?

I think it sounds great and is comprehensive. May consider adding a sentence such as "this work is being done independent of any employment relationship with Well Dot Inc." My only concern is, as written (very formal, contractual and third person), it may trigger her to pull in her startup's attorney. If I worked at a startup (2-3 weeks in) and someone wanted me to agree or sign something written this way, I think I would reach out to the attorney. If you are OK with this, then fine - I just don't want anything to slow down your timeline.

mgkahn commented 5 years ago

I second Katy’s suggestion about including the sentence regarding Well Dot.

While I understand Katy’s concern about potentially triggering a legal review, if you add that this work is separate and independent of her relationship with Well Dot, then you have made this agreement exist outside her employment and Well Dot’s lawyers really should have no say. Don’t mean Katy’s concern may come to being but you have some protection by being explicit that this is non-Well Dot work.
