Let's compare https://openstreetmap.org/ and http://earth.nullschool.net/ .
With OSM, the first time visitor is zoomed in right to where his IP is coming from, at a zoom level not to far, and not too near... just right. The user is immediately "involved"!
With earth.nullschool.net alas he just shown the whole world, with not even a circular "zoom to my location" button in the corner he might press upon.
https://github.com/openstreetmap/openstreetmap-website/issues/1586 is how OSM does it.
