The reason I ask is that previous updates in this package - even minor ones - have brought in new bugs.

Nothing directly related from my side - we were debugging some intermittent connection issues and then noticed that this lib was stale. Looking at their changelog, it looks like there were some actual bug fixes that we might wanna pull into here at some point.
