Value Proposition Statement

Get Started in Minutes with Camunda Self-Managed with the new Camunda 8 Run Distribution.

User Problem

• It is difficult to get started as a Java developer with Camunda 8 in Self-Managed since multiple components and a Docker are required.

Release Notes

You can now use the new Camunda 8 Run Distribution, which allows you to set up a local installation environment of Camunda 8 within a couple of minutes.

User Stories

As a Java Developer interested in running C8 locally, I can download Camunda 8 Run and install the Running automation cluster within a couple of minutes. This archive includes:

• Camunda 8 Fat Jar (includes Zeebe, Tasklist, Operate, Optimize, Identity)

  • We exclude Optimize if its not in the Fat Jar

• Camunda 8 Connectors Runtime Jar

• Elasticsearch - for automation webapps (please start directly on ES v.8.13)

• H2 (in-memory or file-based) - for Identity concerns _update 2024-07-03: not required anymore_

• As a user, I can run Camunda 8 Run on Windows, Linux and Mac

Implementation Notes

• When releasing new versions of Camunda 8 automation cluster, we make sure that this distribution is released as well with the patch, minor or alpha version.
• Consider to leverage the camunda-platform repo for the Camunda 8 Run setup
• Get inspiration by
  • the Optimize demo distribution - it also includes elasticsearch and a jar (similar to what we aim for).
  • The current Camunda 7 run implementation as a reference (you can reach out to: @mboskamp)
• Web Modeler is not included in this iterations (they miss features - once they are feature complete it might get integrated)
  • => End users would deploy models via Desktop Modeler
• Allow users to setup a different database than H2? (Possible in C7)
  • --> Just H2 for now _update 2024-07-03: not required anymore_
• Camunda 8 Run will not replace the manual installation option.
• There will be a new documentation page for Camunda 8 Run.
  • Local installation only!
• Camunda 8 Run should work with versions stated on Support Environments.
• Dont deliver Java with the package (similar to C7)
• ConsoleSM is not part of the scope/ this iteration.

Open questions

• Clarify which existing tests can be used for Camunda 8 Run.
  • Gustavo Bentances to clarify (discover on the way)
• How will identity work without keycloak?
  • Question to Identity: Can identity run with defautl/ buildin user without keycloak?
