End of Ketarin? #14

Closed ghost closed 1 year ago

ghost commented 1 year ago

The forum, wiki, padfile, etc. are gone. Is this the official end of Ketarin or just a maintenance?

rushowr commented 1 year ago

I'm wondering the same thing, since I've downloaded the app and there's NOTHING

floele commented 1 year ago

Hey there, the issues happen because of a server move. I do want to have the forum and wiki back! As for maintenance in general, I don't plan to do any coding or releases at the moment but I'm not aware of any issues that need urgent attention either.

This issue shouldn't be closed until the issue is fixed.

I just almost posted a very similar issue, but thankfully I checked to see if there were any closed issues that might mention it first. To prevent more issues being created for the same problem, this issue should be kept open for as long as these are down, and it should be renamed to something like "Forum, Wiki, PAD file and online database are inaccessible".

floele commented 1 year ago

Yeah I agree (and I wasn't the one who closed it).

Since this is open-source, is there anyone working on improving the code? It's an incredibly useful program, but unfortunately it has a lot of bugs and missing important features which make using it very difficult. I've wasted hours due to the various problems, and am currently fighting with it to get it to just work properly so I can progress with building a template and am at wits end and about to just give up. Since the dev (floele) has stated multiple times they have no intention of doing additional work on it, it's usefulness is unfortunately limited due to these issues, which is a real shame, so I'm hoping there's someone with the ability and willingness to continue on with it. Unfortunately, it's beyond my capabilities or I would do it myself. After all, I've already spent countless hours coding templates and adding hundreds of apps.

Also, side note, it would be helpful to have a copy of the wiki somewhere else, e.g. here on GitHub, since it's not built in to the program and with the site being down for over a month now it makes it impossible to reference it.

In the past I've always fixed all bugs that were reported and reproducible so I'm not sure where the "lot of bugs" is coming from. If you have an issue please report it in a way that allows someone to fix it. Even though I can't promise I'll be working on it anytime soon since I've got my hands a little full this year, there should at least be a record of potential problems.

As for the wiki, I agreee that a switch to github would be nice. I'll see if that is an option.

Well, I use ketarin all the time and, as mentioned, have spent countless hours with it, and almost every time I use it I experience issues, usually multiple ones and multiple times. As it is, the template I've been working on for several hours over the past few days or so has just come to a grinding halt and it seems all that time is wasted because of yet another bug. I would have happily reported them all along as I've encountered them if not for the fact I've avoided the ketarin forums since my posts there were met with hostility. And while I'd report them if that would help them get fixed, I've already wasted hours on it because of them and don't really like the idea of wasting more time reporting them for nothing, especially, again, considering the response I received in the past when trying to communicate about it. Also, considering many of the problems I encounter are intermittent, with things working then not working then working again, simply reporting them without having any debug logs would likely not be terribly helpful anyway. I would just caution anyone looking to get into using it to be careful about spending much time with it, as they might find, like I have, that much of that time is wasted when the program just randomly decides to not work, like it's doing now.

floele commented 1 year ago

Not sure how to reply to that. I don't think problems were met with hostility. But if you feel like all of this is a waste of time then why are you bothering me now? I'm only interested in actionable feedback at the moment and I don't see how can I help you considering your rather vague problem description. I'll try getting the forum back working for now.

vertigo220 commented 1 year ago

I wasn't "bothering" you. My earlier post wasn't directed at you, and I specifically didn't @ mention you. I was simply throwing it out there that it needs work and asking if there was any interest, because if there was, then I would work with anyone interested to try and figure out the issues and get them fixed. As I specifically pointed out, you have repeatedly mentioned you don't intend to work on it, so between that and the response I've gotten before, I was seeing if there was anyone else willing. But I don't like wasting my time, as I'm sure you don't, so I don't make a habit of spending it explaining issues or requesting features with people who have previously shown that doing so is a waste, which is why I haven't participated further in the ketarin forums and why I only posted here as a last-ditch effort to see if there's anyone else that can and will fix the bugs, i.e. if it's even worth my time to go through and report them all.

floele commented 1 year ago

Let me correct my usage of "bothering" and remove the "me" from my sentence. In any case, my suggestion would be the same. Make records of the issues you have so anyone who stumbles upon them can look into and potentially fix them. What you seem to be trying is getting someone to promise their commitment beforehand, which is fair if you want to avoid wasting your time but it will also reduce the probability of anyone working on it.

vertigo220 commented 1 year ago

Fair enough, but the other problem is since many of the issues are intermittent and seem to come out of nowhere just saying "x happens sometimes" isn't going to be very useful, either, especially if/when someone comes along months later and looks at it, at which point I won't be able to provide more help, hence the need for debug logs, which I suppose should be an issue of its own. I may just put what I can out there and hope for the best, after all, what's another several minutes creating an issue that I've just spent the past couple hours trying to figure out? Maybe I'll spend some time on it later.

floele commented 1 year ago

Forum is now back alive, will look into wiki next.

floele commented 1 year ago

Original wiki now imported and accessible here: https://github.com/canneverbe/Ketarin/wiki

I'll close the case for now, if you have any further issues, let me know.
