this allows us to get rid of several --machine flags in commands, and fix an old todo in simulate_event (jhack fire)

Sorry @PietroPasotti -- I meant to respond to this today! After getting the Proxy out, I was off machine models for a couple of days, but I did verify that this worked on my model (LXD, 3.0.2 controller, mostly focal machines)
