Docker and Multipass networking conflicting #2477

Describe the bug After I launch an instance, the process hangs in 'starting' and nothing happens. Eventually it times out and I cannot start the instance.

To Reproduce

  1. Follow Installing snap on Arch Linux
  2. snap install multipass
  3. multipass launch -vvvv -c 2 -m 3G -d 10G -n pilot

Expected behavior I expected the virtual machine to launch, but the process hangs on the launching status.

Hi @RafaelMoreira1180778 this sounds like a firewall blocking traffic beyond DHCP. Can you ping 10.252.103.73 at all? Can you try disabling any firewall you have and try again?

All the traffic to the instances goes through the mpqemubr0 bridge, allowing that could also help.

At this point I wonder if it can be a problem with AppArmor, since I do not have it enabled. I will follow the Arch Wiki and work on getting it enabled and test again, to check if that makes any differece at all.

Doubt AppArmor would be the problem… But I still can't see what's wrong. The instance is up, properly coming up with an IP… After it times out, if you find the IP from the logs, you can't ping/ssh to it?

How long does it stay at Starting…?

Hello @Saviq. It might be a problem with Endevour OS. I took a different approach and I installed Multipass from "scratch" which compiles and runs multipass without the need of snapd.

I have qemu and libvirtd setup and I can launch virtual machines, I also have virt-manager setup.

When using multipass now I get the same effect:

I have set the libvirtd as a driver with $ sudo multipass set local.driver=libvirt.

When the supposed machine is launching I cannot see the machine itself in virt-manager, and that is weird since my connection to qemu shows up and running there.

I will try and spread this info between a few forums, to see if anyone has any clue of what is happening. Must be an weird bug with my install or some package.

Hello, st this point I gave up on multipass. Maybe if I distro hop again I will reuse it. For K8s local development I am using Kubernetes In Docker (kind). It does the job and does not have this sad behavior.

Ah @RafaelMoreira1180778 now I see, Docker and Multipass may not play well together, since both modify networking and iptables, there's likely somewhere that they conflict.

As you can see, no Docker network interface is present. I honestly do not know why this is happening. I can ping the supposed instance while it is "starting" and even after the launch process times out I can still ping it:

@RafaelMoreira1180778 that's expected, we've not yet implemented bridging on the qemu driver on Linux. You could try the lxd driver, however (sudo snap install lxd; sudo lxd init --auto; sudo multipass set local.driver=lxd), which could help with the networking issue as well as expose networking support.

I'm having this problem on MacOS 12.3. Immediately after installing Docker, my Multipass instance lost internet connectivity.

I'm not sure what information would be helpful, so please let me know if there's anything I should show!

I'm having the same problem on Windows 11. Multipass was working fine...installed Docker Desktop, now everything hangs.

Docker does some weird networking stuff. On windows go look at the following file and find the duplicates. C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.ics Delete all the duplicates and let multipass recreate them. Not sure where comparable file is in MacOS

I had this problem with Ubuntu 22.04.1 (5.15.0-67-generic) server and latest multipass 1.11.0 and lxd 5.11, problem is something with docker iptable rule, you can try to add this to iptables and see does this work for you:  sudo iptables -I DOCKER-USER -j ACCEPT

I have same problem with Ubuntu 22.04.2 server and latest multipass 1.11.0.

I install kubernetes with containerd in host, when i delete kubernetes cluster and reboot host, the instance can ping and access internet network.

It works for me. Ubuntu 23.10 (6.5.0-17-generic) desktop and multipass 1.13.1
