As a user i'm too lazy and dumb to use deductive reasoning. Do it for me :)

That is exactly what computers are for, and laziness is awesome. I'll see what I can do.

Well the REST API doesn't do this, but the SOAP API does (see: http://www.salesforce.com/us/developer/docs/api/Content/sforce_api_calls_describelayout.htm). Doesn't look to hard to make work, I'll do it.
