So that it exactly aligns under the visible editor and receives focus in the right location of the page

This is now out of date. The surrogate text area is no longer used for positioning the cursor on the screen, because we're not going to support editing using on-screen keyboard anymore. The supported use-case for smartphones is as Google Cardboard headsets, where it would be visually painful to have the on-screen keyboard appear.
