Ok. Carat.txt is translation of English presentation and it is actual.
But I want propose you a different presentation who is nearer an user manual. If you like you can choose. I wrote it for my friends and I wrote now in Google language. In my mind Google language is an English text that Google translate correctly (in Italian). So, as it is like-English, you can verify and modify.
May be it needs a specification about 3 permissions Carat need.
Carat is an app of Berkeley University and Helsinki University that wants to provide users with tools for a conscious and high performance battery management. Carat does not do, it suggests. So it has a so low battery consumption to be below minimum detection threshold by Android. For Android Carat is like stopped.
> Carat: main functions.
Carat extract random samples from your device during operation and send them to university servers every 3 days. This operating mode limits battery consumption to the "unrecognizable" target, but requires patience and interpretation. Consumption of your apps will be described 4 to 7 days later. Nothing we collect identifies you, personally.
Samples sent to servers are processed by sophisticated artificial intelligence software that estimates the impact of individual apps on overall consumption and classification relevant apps in "HOGs" and "BUGs" by comparing with the community.
"HOGs" are apps that consume a lot on all devices, so with a completely normal behavior even though you can decide to abandon them or look for information for less consumption, better settings, or alternative apps. If Carat should do actions by self, it should exclude these opportunities.
"BUGs" are apps that consume a lot on your device, so, probably, there's something strange. It may be that only you use much more them, or needs different setting or just reinstallation. This is the case with Nougat battery trouble. Reinstallation can eliminate an app optimized for Marsh Mallow and replace it with the optimized version for Nougat. Again, you can search for better settings or alternative apps.
> Carat: other more functionality.
"J-score" is how you position your consumer style over the community by your device model. You will have 99% if you are alone with that model or you do not use it almost never: the J-score is not a vote.
"ACTIONs": here Carat checks if HOG and BUG are active and it proposes shortcuts to kill, manage or delete them. Before you end do anything you must be aware that you can do it.
"TOP HOGs". Most used apps by Carat users.
STATISTICS: an overview of the characteristics of Carat users community.
> Conclusion.
An app invisible to the phone and instructive for you that shares data with others. So an app you must have on your device: if it does not help you it should help community and if one day you will need .... better you don't have to wait for a week; do not you find it?

Carat started at the AMP Lab, UC Berkeley, in collaboration with University of Helsinki. It is under active development by a team of researchers in the NODES group, Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki. We are constantly making improvements, adding features, and giving you more knowledge about how your device is using energy. Remember, knowledge and collaboration is power!
