The actual filtering function allows just a basic filter on the quantile of the mean maximum expression, it would definitely be better to filter based also on the variance

Agreed. Maybe since this filter is a bit more complicated I would also include the option to make a plot for that so one can parametrise the filter function in a more "educated" way.
