QUESTION: is it important that showvars accepts a list? Standard usage would seem to be c(). I guess its because we are overloading it by also making "masked" and "all" options? XXX

that's right. That's the simple solution I can think of. Where we have a single overloaded showvars control these 3 options (two characters, 1 list). The third list option is the oddman out as it's the list. But i think the list is the only flexible way to handle any unforseen end user scenarios
