I(Possessor~>Agent? Originator~>Agent? just Agent?) spent [my(Theme~>Gestalt) time in grad school] learning to knit.
For spending time, maybe we should distinguish 'occupy time' sense and 'consciously choose one activity over others' sense.
Metaphor of time as a resource is complicated. Having time refers to control over some future time period and not having obligations in that time. Spending time refers to doing something intentionally in a period of available time, especially when time is "limited" and therefore the agent has to carefully decide how to allocate it. No actual transfer in the target domain. Giving time refers to willingness to devote time to someone else, i.e. to accept a request to interact with somebody during a period of time.
