Possibilities discussed include: Quantity ("many generations" is an amount of family) Whole (a generation is a part of a family) Characteristic~Identity ("my family" as a characteristic specifying what the generations are?)

I get the reading that the generations are a subset of the family. Cf. many generations OUT OF my family.
