Oooh interesting! I think "a car OF limited utility" would be the same as "a car OF high quality". But "become" adds an extra wrinkle. Another option for the scene role is Goal because it's the end-state.
Another semi-copula that works here: "it is starting to seem OF limited utility"
Ideally we'd use multiple construal (Goal~>Characteristic~>Identity). But we only allow 2 supersenses, so Goal~>Identity.
Adding a different example to the guidelines: "The devices became out of sync" (Goal~Locus). I think that is less marginal and will point the way to how to interpret complements of "become".
We went with Characteristic~Identity due to similarity to guidelines examples like "car OF high quality", but weren't sure because the construction's not quite the same. There was also a suggestion that it's Theme of 'become'?
