This is not the normal use of the possessive clitic because the head noun ("career") is also modified by a possessive pronoun!
I guess it is a construction similar to "my painter's smock" or "my children's book": 's modifies a noun which describes a kind, not a definite referent. There we say Beneficiary I think: a book for children. But with "career", we say "career as a painter", not "career for a painter". Hmm...
\~ career as a painter. Identity\~Gestalt??
