discouraged me IN my career #94

The grown-ups discouraged me IN my painter's career when I was six years old Little Prince chapter 2 sent_id = lpp_1943.54

The use of 'in' here seems a little odd, maybe translationese, and we aren't quite sure how to interpret it. Suggestions include Topic, Circumstance\~Locus, Theme\~Locus?

nschneid commented 4 years ago

Circumstance~Locus feels most natural to me. Theme as scene role doesn't seem to fit.

esmanning commented 4 years ago

The argument for Theme was that if you assume this means essentially the same thing as "discouraged me FROM X", X seems to be a core participant (Arg2 in Propbank).

I think it could also be paraphrased as "The grown-ups discouraged my career?"

nschneid commented 4 years ago

It could be paraphrased that way but that would be a different framing/highlighted relation than "in my career", at least as I understand it. A bit like "I hosted the party" vs. "I hosted many guests for the party".
