As it turns out there seems to be a field of research at exactly the approach that I took for my thesis. It is called "Ant Colony Optimizations Algorithm", which is not that far from "hive". I thought of bees but it apparently the behavior is rather associated with ants :)

The points that make it interesting are:

• reinforce line creation base on point-sharing not on line metrics
• introduce a decreasing factor for elements (points) that dont match
• generally applicable for any meta-heauristic convergence problem, not just lines/routes
