Nice. Thank you. I will merge it with main branch so we can see it already rendered! But I will keep your ep-record-keeping branch active so you can work on edits/changes. will write my remarks in the next comment after merging.
"FAIR record keeping, for example" - I am not sure if FAIR record keeping makes sense here, better Good/Crefull etc
"What are advantages and disadvantages of traditional analog record keeping vs. digital record keeping?" Lets talk about anaolog vs digital protocols here, as we talk about protocols and the students looked at protocols.io
I know that i am boring with that, but I do consider protocols.io and ELN distinct products.
In aswers, advantages of analogue record. (instead of analogue record keeping), by droping keeping we kind of speak general of both ELN and protocols. (Of course droping keeping from the rest as well)
ELN excercise: Create a lab-project on Benchling and clone a lab entry
Thats need to split in 3 seperate excercise section with Two/Three liners text between them.
Re-use published lab entry In follow up text, write, explore the lab notebook, have you noticed the embeded pictures, the dates, and tabs referencing etc.
Adapting protocol to your needs. In follow up text, restate how easy it was to make changes while still having reference to the original protocol.
Exporting your record.
.... Adapt public protocols from protocols.io (to somehow state that we do different thing)
Rather than show the export again, we can add as optional, export to pdf.
We should ask to go back original protocol using the links and check how its stats have increased. The PERKs of being Accesible = Accountable.
To test - fork my public fork of your original (but I need to edit something), will the fork tabk show the 3 level tree of forks. If so it will be amazing. And a good way to explain why it is called forking!
Reformat how to choose text into bullet points for ease of reading / converting into PoerPoint slide. Benchling is not free. Or if benchling is free than so are RSpace and LabArchive. Check with Andrew R, but we may have more materials to link for choocing ELN.
Lets make a box, which say why not start small, and talk about using free universities wikis if available. And shamelessly link to video of our presentation of WikiBench.
Digital records have automatic version controls; analog records cannot. (F) why false?
Let's drop: At the University of Edinburgh, we’re required to use either Benchling or Protocols.io (F) People are not real scientists until they have made tea. (F) (it is not UoE course,)
Digital records are generally easier to search than analog records. - drop general we can make it stronger
HI @Boehmin! Remember to add the credits for the nice picture you have in the episode.
Hi All,
We've restructured the record keeping lesson and I've hopefully managed to do most changes the way you pictured them @zajawka - since you asked about what happened in the example with Novartis, I added that to the intro paragraph and explicitly stated how FAIR record keeping can help avoid things like that in the future if we implement it.
Please have a read through and if you could try the Benchling exercise to see if all looks fine and goes well. It is simpler as before and focused on provenance as discussed.
Let me know what changes you'd like us to make.
Cheers Ines
