Hi everyone, I am here to see if there is any plan/interest developing lessons in chemistry and materials science related exercises.

janash commented 5 years ago

We (The Molecular Sciences Software Institute) are developing lessons on introductory Python with examples relevant to computational chemists. These lessons cover similar topics to Software Carpentry's course on coding with Python, but cover concepts and use data and skills which are relevant specifically to computational chemistry undergraduate/graduate students. Lesson materials can be found here.

This lesson is still under development and we welcome discussion/contributions.

@janash - We've just created The Carpentries Incubator GH organization to provide a single point of entry for community members to share lesson materials and discuss ideas for new lessons. Your lesson materials were previously listed in the lesson-ideas repo, which has now been deprecated. All of the issues in that repo have been migrated here. We're still working on organizing this repo, so please do let me know if you have ideas for how best to organize this information to make it accessible to the community.

@janash - I've finally had a chance to look through the MSSI lesson materials and they're looking really great! Have you all had an opportunity to pilot test them yet? Any plans to teach them in the near future?

The Carpentries has grant support from the Sloan Foundation to facilitate development of a Carpentries-style lesson for chemistry. Would the MSSI be interested in developing your existing materials into an official Data Carpentry lesson? We're just in the early stages now of figuring out what this curriculum needs to include to be applicable broadly within the chemistry community. I would love to chat with you about your materials, how the group determined the topics to cover and data to use, and any pilots/tests you've done of this lesson so far. You can schedule a meeting with me through my Calendly, or please let me know if there's someone else at the MSSI that I should be talking with. Thanks!
