Carpentries slack

• some instructors are not a member of the carpentries slack
• some instructors face difficulty in joining the carpentries slack
• slack may have some potential for active engagement compared to topic box

Recommendations:

• may be made a part of the instructor-training
• certified instructors may be (auto)invited to slack

Resource-sharing via collaborative document

• updated list of resource-sharing options are unavailable to the community

Recommendation: Publicizing a list of potential collaborative document choices and may be included in the guidelines

• DropBox
• OneDrive etc.

Sharing live progress with the next instructor and learners:

• instructors may face difficulty in collaboration, i.e., next instructor picking up from the partial progress by the previous instructor, e.g., code and relevant status of data files
• learners may face difficulty in following up
• it may be difficult to copy codes from the chat due to being interleaved with other information
• it may be difficult to maintain continuous block of code and data in the collaborative document to match the demonstration on screen by the instructor
• carpentries zoom room may not have copying from chat enabled
• carpentries zoom room may not allow uploading and sharing files

Recommendations/practices:

• some workshop share code samples ahead of time or posts/emails notes, codes, and recording at the end of each day
• to share the code being shown on instructor's screen auto-synchronized almost instantly by setting up DropBox, Google drive, etc. as appropriate
• RStudio has the autosave option now, this may be combined with some backup/sync service so that the learners always have the updated version of the files. Adjusting the interval may help with cloud synchronization problems. Reference

BigBlueButton has an option to export its chat and etherpad. One might also consider building a videoconferencing solution based on WebRTC that fits the Carpentries workshops.
