  • Norwegian (Norway), but people normally understand Danish and Swedish quite well.
• what language(s) are used in instruction in institutions of higher education?
  • At bachelor level, quite often Norwegian is the primary language. Swedish and Danish are allowed to use in exams. English skill is required upon entry to higher education, and it happens that lectures are given in English at bachelor level as well. Often textbooks are written in English. For master level and higher, mostly English is used.
• if spoken languages and languages of instruction are different, where would you suggest The Carpentries focus our translation priorities - spoken languages or languages used for instruction?
  • For me as non-native speaker of Norwegian, it seems that English-based lesson materials are not a big problem for most of the learners coming to the Carpentries workshops. In addition, the higher the education level is, the more international students are. Thus English makes most sense.
• for content and resources made available for local Carpentries events like CarpentryConnects?
  • Although the Scandinavian languages are similar to each other, a big portion of those who are working/studying at the PhD level or higher in Norway and other Scandinavian countries are from outside of Scandinavian countries. Often they are fluent in a language of the country they live in, but for foreigners it is difficult to understand other Scandinavian language. Therefore English makes most sense here as well.
