Goal 1 of The Carpentries Strategic Plan reads: Build regional and local capacity to empower sustainable communities.

One objective under this goal is: Develop a plan for strategically engaging libraries and research computing centres as Carpentries hubs for their institutions.

As our member organisation communities have multiplied and grown over the last five years, we have seen anecdotally and through the 2019 Member Survey data the advantageous placement of libraries and computational centers within organisations to serve as hubs for Carpentries activities. Once the current membership models have been updated to match the needs of our diverse community and membership infrastructure has been developed to support the expansion of the program, libraries and computational centers represent highly impactful targets for outreach. Therefore, in the first quarter of 2021 (January - March) the Membership Team will develop a plan for the strategic engagement of libraries and computational centers through the membership program and recommend further steps for implementation.

In September 2019, we announced Goal 5 of The Carpentries Strategic Plan, specifically, our objective to develop opportunities for more communities to participate in workshops and Memberships through programs that plan for and offset associated costs. Our goal is to provide continued support for workshops and instructor training, as well as create a membership scholarship program to reach new library communities and consortiums.

Through our IMLS funding we were able to provide seed (free) memberships to 5 libraries: Texas State Library and Archives Commission, California State University San Marcos, Lebanon Public Libraries New Hampshire, Ohio State University, and California State University Humboldt.
