What about accessing the URLs from the social networks themselves? Twitter's is http://urls.api.twitter.com/1/urls/count.json?url=URL_HERE
. I'm sure Facebook and Google+ have one too.
It's also worth handling cases where there are 0 or very few shares... Nothing looks sadder than no engagement, especially on articles that have had time to circulate. I doubt that many people want to display that info directly.

We can use this API to grab them. We'd have to have handling for an "over api limit" response, and allow a
sharedcount_api_key
option for if the free tier runs out as well.
