The following is a transcript of my installation attempt on a new, freshly created container:

root@openpanel:/tmp# ./panel_installer What would you like to install?

1) OpenPanel 2) OpenApp 3) PureFTPd only Select a number: 1 OpenPanel Updating package database... Making sure gnupg is installed... Installing... done Making sure build-essential is installed... No packages found matching build-essential. Installing... done Installing PureFTPd... The following lines will be added to your /etc/apt/sources.list: deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main universe multiverse deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-security main universe multiverse

Proceed? (y/N) Y Updating package database... Installing build dependencies...

The script just stops here indefinitely. The following excerpt from the panel_installer.log shows that it is waiting for acknowledgement of the installation of the dependencies

==> apt-get build-dep pure-ftpd Reading package lists... Building dependency tree... Reading state information... Note, selecting libpam0g-dev instead of libpam-dev Note, selecting libcap-dev instead of libcap2-dev The following NEW packages will be installed: bsdmainutils comerr-dev curl cvs debhelper gettext gettext-base groff-base html2text info install-info intltool-debian krb5-multidev libcap-dev libcap2 libcroco3 libcurl3 libfile-copy-recursive-perl libgssrpc4 libkadm5clnt-mit7 libkadm5srv-mit7 libkdb5-4 libkrb5-dev libldap2-dev libmail-sendmail-perl libmysqlclient-dev libmysqlclient16 libpam0g-dev libpq-dev libpq5 libssl-dev libsys-hostname-long-perl libxml2 man-db mysql-common po-debconf sgml-base update-inetd xml-core zlib1g-dev The following packages will be upgraded: libgssapi-krb5-2 libk5crypto3 libkrb5-3 libkrb5support0 libldap-2.4-2 libpam0g libssl0.9.8 7 upgraded, 40 newly installed, 0 to remove and 22 not upgraded. Need to get 20.6MB of archives. After this operation, 56.8MB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

Manually entering Y (see below) and hitting enter will solve the problem. However, the user is not aware of this, and it should be fixed for the public release

Updating package database... Installing build dependencies... Y

Downloading sourcecode... Editing rules file... Generating package... Installing... Pinning... done The following lines will be added to your /etc/apt/sources.list: deb http://download.openpanel.com/deb/ lucid main deb-src http://download.openpanel.com/deb/ lucid main

Proceed? (y/N) Y Adding key... done Updating sources...

As you can see above, the script stalls again at Updating sources It expects another input. Now something weird happens: I hit Y and it shows me what it was looking for

Configuring mysql-server-5.1

While not mandatory, it is highly recommended that you set a password for the MySQL administrative "root" user.

If this field is left blank, the password will not be changed.

New password for the MySQL "root" user:

Repeat password for the MySQL "root" user:

Postfix Configuration

Please select the mail server configuration type that best meets your needs.

No configuration: Should be chosen to leave the current configuration unchanged. Internet site: Mail is sent and received directly using SMTP. Internet with smarthost: Mail is received directly using SMTP or by running a utility such as fetchmail. Outgoing mail is sent using a smarthost. Satellite system: All mail is sent to another machine, called a 'smarthost', for delivery. Local only: The only delivered mail is the mail for local users. There is no network.

  1. No configuration 2. Internet Site 3. Internet with smarthost 4. Satellite system 5. Local only

General type of mail configuration: 2

The "mail name" is the domain name used to "qualify" ALL mail addresses without a domain name. This includes mail to and from : please do not make your machine send out mail from root@example.org unless root@example.org has told you to.

This name will also be used by other programs. It should be the single, fully qualified domain name (FQDN).

Thus, if a mail address on the local host is foo@example.org, the correct value for this option would be example.org.

System mail name: openpanel.ideaday.de

Configuring courier-base

Courier uses several configuration files in /etc/courier. Some of these files can be replaced by a subdirectory whose contents are concatenated and treated as a single, consolidated, configuration file.

The web-based administration provided by the courier-webadmin package relies on configuration directories instead of configuration files. If you agree, any directories needed for the web-based administration tool will be created unless there is already a plain file in place.

Create directories for web-based administration? yes

Configuring courier-ssl

SSL certificate required

POP and IMAP over SSL requires a valid, signed, X.509 certificate. During the installation of courier-pop-ssl or courier-imap-ssl, a self-signed X.509 certificate will be generated if necessary.

For production use, the X.509 certificate must be signed by a recognized certificate authority, in order for mail clients to accept the certificate. The default location for this certificate is /etc/courier/pop3d.pem or /etc/courier/imapd.pem.

The first one is easy to fix with a -y option. I actually did that already, but forgot to commit it.

About the second one:

Is the intervention required during the Updating sources... phase, or the Installing openpanel-suggested... phase? While your post reads like it's the former, the log reads like it's the latter. If that is the case, it is desired behaviour, because otherwise the user isn't presented with the configuration prompts during installation. I guess I could write something that hides the details of the installation and only asks the important questions, but that seemed like unnecessary, bug inducing complexity to me. But maybe it's enough to tweak the verbosity options of apt-get.

Was the final product a successful setup?

The final product was a successful setup, as far as I have tested the functionality (I have not tested e-Mail yet, for instance - creating e-Mail accounts was successful, but no actual testing has been done).

The system seemingly stalled at "Updating sources..."

I opened the log in another console at the same time, and I think I saw the Installing openpanel-suggested output in the log, but not in my main console which ran the installation script. After pressing Y, the script showed the output.

Could you please commit the -y option, and test the scripts behaviour at "Updating sources ..."? (i.e. not pressing any buttons until it actually requests you to), checking the log in a second console? Maybe you just need to wait a couple of seconds more ...

I did some testing on the new VE and I think sometimes the Updating sources... part just takes a little while.
