Build system improvements #9

Patch titles pretty much explain everything. This gets Travis CI support going for different versions of GCC, Clang, and PGI, most of the other stuff is targeted at getting that working.

Note that you'll need to log in to Travis and enable builds for this repo if you want Travis to work.
